CA.TV Interview: Filmmaker Margaret Broach, “Out-Touching Cancer”

.

Margaret Broach has made numerous shorts with the Death in Stilettos production company. “Out-Touching Cancer” is showing at the SoAl Film Fest this weekend.

CA.TV: What inspired you to get started in filmmaking?

MB: My interest was sparked from the very first movies my father took me to see when I was really young… probably around five years old. By the time I made it to high school, I was interested in creative writing and acting and felt I had more of a chance in the theater world. You just didn’t hear about people from Alabama “making it.” It seemed that in order for your movies to get noticed, you had to be really rich, extremely talented, and living in the 90210 area. However, when I started taking screenwriting and TV production classes in college, I fell so in love with making films that I didn’t care if anyone saw them… I just wanted to make them. I’m just now getting to the point where I’m entering my films into competitions and posting my film scramble projects on YouTube.CA.TV: What film are you most proud of and/or would recommend Coastal Alabamans to watch?

MB: Most everyone seems to be drawn to the short documentary I made with my friend Kristen Ryan, “Out-Touching Cancer.” It won the Pediatric Cancer Awareness Film Competition that Sidewalk Motion Picture Festival held in 2008; screened at the Montgomery Film Fest in 2009; is scheduled to show at the South Alabama Film Festival this weekend; and it’s also being screened at the Big Easy Short Film Festival in New Orleans on November 14. Although this film has received a lot of attention, I feel that there are two films that Coastal Alabamians should see: “S.S.A.” and “Sexy 601.” Both are on my YouTube site and have received over a thousand views each. To me, they represent what I make best: Short comedic films. You can see them at http://www.facebook.com/l/e2196;www.youtube.com/deadstilettos

CA.TV: Any new projects coming up?

MB: New projects? Are you kidding?! I have a few coming up, which I can’t talk about much… They’re top secret. I can say that I have a zombie film in the works—who doesn’t these days—and I also have a silent, dark comedy that is in pre-production. Also, after watching a few horror movies, I’ve been inspired to make a parody. So my film group, Death in Stilettos, and I are getting together this weekend to begin shooting… again, I wish I could elaborate more, but I like surprising people… And yes, we do accept donations.CA.TV: Any suggestion to make Coastal Alabama a filmmaking mecca?

MB: Maybe we should look at what Louisiana and Georgia are doing. They seem to be swarming with filmmakers and companies coming in to make movies. I’ve seen more casting and crew calls in Louisiana than I have here. I’m not sure what exactly they’re doing to attract filmmakers, but I do know that they seem to have bigger film festivals and educational opportunities for people looking to gain skills in editing and filming.
